COLD - DRY APRIL

Cool weather and lack of rain fall seems to have slowed down the arrival of spring.  Greens are rolling much better but still showing the effects of our December aerification.  Uneven growth in the roughs, and no leaves on trees just makes it seem like winter just doesn't want to let go.

Not to worry.  warmer weather is on its way and it will not take long for things to "pop".    This past week is the first week we started mowing some roughs.  Fairways and tees were mowed twice so the grass is starting to grow.  We got our water features up and running this week and I spotted this blue bird on # 4.  When the sun catches them just right there color is amazing.

ORGANIZED CHOAS

Early spring means getting things ready and open for play.  Like everything else, there are always wrenches thrown in to make things interesting.  This week we noticed the large Zelkova tree was cracked and needs some emergency attention.  We will have a threaded rod installed along with some cabling to keep the tree from splitting.   Because of the new paths we had to move some ball washers and Tee rocks.  We are still working on these.   A small leak on a large pipe on the irrigation system was noticed and our contractor had to come and fix it.  We have been checking the irrigation system, seems that some of the sprinklers went out of adjustment when the system was winterized last fall.  The manufacture has been alerted to the problem and is working on a solution so that it doesn’t happen again.   All in the life of spring start up on golf courses!!!!

Moving the tee rock on 11.

I thought this was interesting. The Daffodil shows where the flower bed used to be before the new path was installed.  This is the 11th. tee.

FINALLY SOME RAIN

Normally I would not be wishing too hard for spring rains but having 3 acres of sod will make anybody wish for some liquid sunshine from Mother Nature.  We did receive a little over a half inch last night and more is expected tomorrow.  That should hold us over for a while and free up a few hands to continue our course clean up.   The course is starting to shape up.  The greens aerification holes are starting to fill in.  We put out our regular pins and cups today and started placing our ball washers and garbage cans in there normal locations.

On a good note, the putting green is looking better every day and the winter cover has officially been pulled off.   I am expecting a mid May opening for the green and the first tee will be open this Saturday.   We are making progress.  Tony is top-dressing the green, this helps firm up and smooth the surface.   Jose is cutting down the native areas.  We do this to keep the weeds down with out having to spray herbicides.

EARLY APRIL UPDATE:

Our seasonal staff returned to work this past Monday.   The first order of business is to clean up all the small twigs and debris left behind from the long winter.  Once we get a good jump on that, we will start raking bunkers.   The greens still have the open holes from our late fall aerification.   They just need some warmer weather to get them growing.  By the end of the month they should be fully healed.  There is certainly no shortage of work to be done.

Some of the Sod on the putting green dried out before we could get the irrigation system up and running.   I don't think this will be a major problem.  We are keeping the sod moist now that we  have water and the areas are all ready showing signs of growth.   Some warmer temperatures will surly help speed the recovery.

The cart paths are 99% done.  The contractor is putting the finishing touches on some of the edges that need to be sodded.  The expansion with # 17 fairway turned out great.   The paths are a great addition to the course.

Some areas dried out on the new Putting Green

I am still expecting to be able to open the green by the middle of May.

we added a few mulched paths for the maintenance crew to get around the course.

17 fairway expansion came out great.
